Japanese tattoo art has several names - irezumi or horimono in the Japanese language. Irezumi is the word for the traditional visible tattoo that covers large parts of the body like the back. Japanese tattoo art has a very long history.

Since the influence of Confucianism and Buddhism on the Japanese culture, tattoo art has a negative connotation for the majority of the Japanese people. In the eyes of an average Japanese a tattoo is considered a mark of a yakuza - a member of the Japanese mafia - or a macho symbol of members of the lower classes.
Early History of Japanese Tattoo Art

Archaeologists believe that the early settlers of Japan, the Ainu people, used facial tattoos. Chinese documents report about the Wa people - the Chinese name for their Japanese neighbors - and their habits of diving into water for fish and shells and decorating the whole body with tattoos. These reports are about 1700 years old.

For the higher developed Chinese culture, tattooing was a barbaric act. When Buddhism was brought from China to Japan and with it a strong influence of the Chinese culture, tattooing got negative connotations. Criminals were marked with tattoos to punish and identify them in society.
During the Edo period - 1603-1868 - Japanese tattoo art became a part of ukiyo-e - the floating world culture. Prostitutes - yujos - of the pleasure quarters used tattoos to increase their attractiveness for customers. Body tattoos were used by laborers and firemen.

From 1720 on, the tattooing of criminals became an official punishment and replaced the amputation of the nose and the ears. The criminal received a ring tattoo around the arm for each offense or a character tattoo on his forehead. Tattooing criminals was continued until 1870, when it was abolished by the new Meiji government of the Japanese Emperor.

This visible punishment created a new class of outcasts that had no place in society and nowhere to go. Many of these outlaws were ronin - masterless samurai warriors. They had no alternatives than organizing in gangs. These men formed the roots of yakuza - the organized criminals in Japan in the twentieth century.

In 1827 the ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa published the first 6 designs of the 108 Heroes of the Suikoden. The Suikoden were something like ancient Robin Hoods - honorable bandits. The story is based on a classic Chinese novel - Shui-Hi-Chuan, that dates from the 13th and 14th century. The novel was first translated into Japanese in 1757 by Okajima Kanzanion. At the turn of the 18th to the 19th century the story was published with illustrations by Katsushika Hokusai. The novel of the 108 honorable bandits was very popular in Japan and caused a kind of Suikoden craze among Japanese townspeople.

Kuniyoshi's Suikoden ukiyo-e designs show the heroes in colorful, full body tattoos. Japanese tattoo prints and tattoo art in general then became stylish. Tattoos were considered iki - cool - but were restricted to the lower classes.

The richness and fantasy of the Japanese tattoo prints designs shown by Kuniyoshi are used by some tattoo artists up to this time. In its strive to adopt Western civilizations, the Imperial Meiji government banned tattooing as something considered a barbaric relict of the past. The funny thing was that the Japanese irezumi artists now got new clients - the sailors from the foreign ships anchoring in Japanese harbors. Thus Japanese tattoo art was spread to the West.

During the first half of the twentieth century, horimono remained a forbidden art form until 1948, when the prohibition was officially lifted. Some say that this step had become necessary to legalize the demand by soldiers of the American occupation forces for horimono and irezumi.
Tattoo Art in Modern Japan

Although some younger people may consider tattooing as trendy, the majority of the Japanese population still considers it as something connected to the underworld of mafia gangsters or a bad low class habit at the best. Younger people who consider tattoos as iki - a minority among Japanese youth - tend to use partial tattoos in Western style on their upper arms, where it is not directly visible.

Artists participating in not only for business and create more vibrant arts, can also look forward to meeting with old friends and to attend seminars on the latest techniques. Conventions offer something for everyone who is interested and involved in the tattoo world.
Conventions may vary according to size and scale that some of these local festivals takes a day or two, and with the talent of a city or area, others may take up to one week and take the artists and participants from around the region, country or even from the whole the world. Some of these designations:

Producer: Artists set up booths where display pictures of their work and the use of body art.
In Competitions: Usually competitions run tats inked printing ink on a specific day for the entire duration of the agreement. Categories could include "Best Gray Scale", "Best sleeve (arm or leg)," "most original design," etc.
Events: Some of the larger conventions will include seminars on how to master techniques such as grayscale recent health or procedures to keep your equipment, etc. They are taught by professionals and usually takes several hours.
Entertainment: You can find a live band, DJ to turn the melody Party (frequently held outside the place, but instead close to the Convention), and even side shows the "freak show" with a unique act - and even fashion shows screwed up. Some agreements will have a car & bike show, sometimes skateboard demonstrations or playgrounds for children.
Accessories: There are exhibitions on the history of tattoo designs or some artists, etc. Sometimes you can see the old machines on display.
Commodities: Not only that, you can get a new account, you may find that your body is available at piercing convention. This may be a henna body painting done well. Vendors will provide food, clothing, cosmetics, accessories and jewelry.

TATTOO yang bahasa aslinya adalah Tahiti “tatu” yang mempunyai arti "tanda". Menurut para ahli sejarah seni tattoo ini sudah muncul sejak 12.000 tahun SM. Pada jaman dalu tattoo dilambangkan sebagai ritual bagi suku-suku kuno seperti Maori, Inca, Ainu, Polynesians, dll. Di Mesir, yaitu terdapat bukti sejarah tattoo pada pyramids, berupa tattoo tertua. Karena menurut sejarah, bangsa Mesir-lah yang jadi biang tumbuh suburnya tattoo di dunia. Bangsa Mesir kan dikenal sebagai bangsa yang terkenal kuat, so gara-gara ekspansi mereka terhadap bangsa-bangsa laen, seni tattoo ini juga ikut-ikutan menyebar luas, seperti ke daerah Yunani, Persia, dan Arab.(kunjungi Sheero Mero Disco)

Apa alasan bagi suku-suku kuno di dunia membuat Tattoo? Bangsa Yunani kuno memakai tattoo sebagai tanda pengenal para anggota dari badan intelijen mereka, alias mata-mata perang pada saat itu. Di sini tattoo menunjukan pangkat dari si mata-mata tersebut. berbeda dengan bangsa Romawi, mereka memakai tattoo sebagai tanda bahwa seseorang itu berasal dari golongan budak, dan Tattoo juga dirajahi ke setiap tubuh para tahanannya. Tattoo alias Wen Shen atau Rajah smulai merambahi negara Cina sekitar taon 2000 SM. Wen Shen konon artinya “akupunktur badan”. perlu diketahui, sama seperti bangsa Romawi, bangsa Cina kuno memakaiTtattoo untuk menandakan bahwa seseorang pernah dipenjara. Sementara di Tiongkok sendiri, budaya Tattoo terdapat pada beberapa etnis minoritasnya, yang telah diwarisi oleh nenek moyang mereka, seperti etnis Drung, Dai, dan Li, namun hanya para wanita yang berasal dari etnis Li dan Drung yang memilik kebiasaan mentato wajahnya. Riwayat adat-istiadat Tattoo etnis Drung ini muncul sekitar akhir masa Kedinastian Kaisar Ming (sekitar 350 tahun yang lalu), ketika itu mereka diserang oleh sekelompok grup etnis lainnya dan pada saat itu mereka menangkapi beberapa wanita dari etnis Drung untuk dijadikan sebagai budak. Demi menghindari terjadinya perkosaan, para wanita tersebut kemudian mentato wajah mereka untuk membuat mereka kelihatan kurang menarik di mata sang penculik. Meskipun kini para wanita dari etnis minoritas Drung ini tidak lagi dalam keadaan terancam oleh penyerangan dari etnis minoritas lainnya, namun mereka masih terus mempertahankan adat-istiadat ini sebagai sebuah lambang kekuatan kedewasaan. Para anak gadis dari etnis minoritas Drung mentato wajahnya ketika mereka berusia antara 12 dan 13 tahun sebagai sebuah simbol pendewasaan diri. Ada beberapa penjelasan yang berbeda, mengapa para wanita tersebut mentato wajahnya. Sebagian orang mengatakan, bahwa warga etnis Drung menganggap wanita yang ber-Tattoo terlihat lebih cantik dan para kaum Adam etnis Drung tidak akan menikahi seorang wanita yang tidak memiliki Tattoo di wajahnya. Di Indonesia Orang-orang Mentawai di kepulauan Mentawai, suku Dayak di Kalimantan, dan suku Sumba di NTB, sudah mengenal tattoo sejak jaman dulu. Bahkan bagi suku Dayak, seseorang yang berhasil “memenggal kepala” musuhnya, dia mendapat tattoo di tangannya. Begitu juga dengan suku Mentawai, tattoo-nya Tidak dibuat sembarangan. Sebelum pembuatan tattoo dilaksanakan, ada Panen Enegaf alias upacara inisiasi yang dilakukan di Puturkaf Uma (galeri rumah tradisional suku mentawai). Upacara ini dipimpin oleh Sikerei (dukun). Setelah upacara ini selesai, barulah proses Tattoo-nya dilaksanakan.

AWALNYA, bahan untuk membuat Tattoo berasal dari arang tempurung yang dicampur dengan air tebu. Alat-alat yang digunakan masih sangat tradisional. Seperti tangkai kayu, jarum dan pemukul dari batang. Orang-orang pedalaman masih menggunakan teknik manual dan dari bahan-bahan tradisional. Orang-orang Eskimo misalnya, memakai jarum yang terbuat dari tulang binatang. Di kuil-kuil Shaolin menggunakan gentong tembaga yang dipanaskan untuk mencetak gambar naga pada kulit tubih. Murid-murid Shaolin yang dianggap memenuhi syarat untuk mendapatkan simbol itu, dengan menempelkan kedua lengan mereka pada semacam cetakan gambar naga yang ada di kedua sisi gentong tembaga panas itu. Jauh berbeda dengan sekarang. Saat ini, terutama di kalangan masyarakat perkotaan, pembuatan Tattoo dilakukan dengan mesin elektrik. Mesin ini ditemukan pada tahun 1891 di Inggris. Kemudian zat pewarnanya menggunakan tinta sintetis (tinta tattoo).

PETUNJUK UMUM SEBELUM MELAKUKAN PROSES TATTOO

1. Ikuti prosedur umum dan peraturan yang ditetapkan oleh Tattoo Artist anda, berkonsultasilah terlebih dahulu serta dapatkan informasi selengkap-lengkapnya seputar Tattoo yang anda inginkan. Berpikirlah secara matang menjaga agar tidak terjadi kemungkinan adanya penyesalan dikemudian hari. Bagi anda yang berumur dibawah standar ketetapan yang dikeluarkan oleh Tattoo Artist anda, diharuskan membawa surat persetujuan dari orang tua/wali sebelum anda melakukan proses Tattoo.

2. Perhatikan dengan benar alat-alat yang akan digunakan oleh Tattoo Artist anda dalam melakukan prosesnya, apakah sudah didesinfeksikan dengan bersih dan steril? tidak terkontaminasi oleh berbagai macam bentuk kuman dan bakteri, agar anda terbebas dari berbagi macam penyakit yang cukup serius. Untuk anda yang mempunyai permasalahan serius dengan kulit yang cukup sensitif, disarankan untuk memeriksakan diri anda terlebih dahulu kepada Dokter spesialis (bila diperlukan), atau tanyakan langsung pada Tattoo Artist anda.

3. Untuk lebih mempermudah jalannya proses tattoo, usahakan kondisi dan kesehatan tubuh anda harus dalam keadaan normal dan stabil, cukup tidur dan makan, terbebas dari pengaruh Alkohol (minuman keras) dan Narkoba (obat-obatan terlarang dan sejenisnya), menjaga agar tidak terjadi permasalah yang cukup serius pada saat proses pengerjaan.
